Global Warming (Bush State of the Union)

This is a Major issue, everyone I have had the privilege to talk to will agree that the weather is at new extremes all over the world. So, why has this issue only been addressed once in a state of the union address. Lets look at what was said in that address:

"We made a lot of progress, thanks to good policies here in Washington and the strong response of the market. And now even more dramatic advances are within reach. Tonight, I ask Congress to join me in pursuing a great goal. Let us build on the work we've done and reduce gasoline usage in the United States by 20 percent in the next 10 years. (Applause.) When we do that we will have cut our total imports by the equivalent of three-quarters of all the oil we now import from the Middle East.

To reach this goal, we must increase the supply of alternative fuels, by setting a mandatory fuels standard to require 35 billion gallons of renewable and alternative fuels in 2017 -- and that is nearly five times the current target. (Applause.) At the same time, we need to reform and modernize fuel economy standards for cars the way we did for light trucks -- and conserve up to 8.5 billion more gallons of gasoline by 2017.

Achieving these ambitious goals will dramatically reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but it's not going to eliminate it. And so as we continue to diversify our fuel supply, we must step up domestic oil production in environmentally sensitive ways. (Applause.) And to further protect America against severe disruptions to our oil supply, I ask Congress to double the current capacity of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. (Applause.)

America is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that will enable us to live our lives less dependent on oil. And these technologies will help us be better stewards of the environment, and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change. (Applause.) "
Now lets dissect what was said during this address paragraph by paragraph:
1
"Let us build on the work we've done and reduce gasoline usage in the United States by 20 percent in the next 10 years."
"The White House gave no specific details other than to say Bush will ask his government to starting implementing the plan through regulatory action.
Bush proposed at his State of the Union address early this year to reduce American dependence on foreign oil by 20 percent over 10 years. The U.S. Congress has not yet approved the plan."
"We made a lot of progress, thanks to good policies here in Washington and the strong response of the market. And now even more dramatic advances are within reach."
Umm. I don't see any progress do you? I see bush asking to start the plan.
"When we do that we will have cut our total imports by the equivalent of three-quarters of all the oil we now import from the Middle East."
I have some harsh comments on this line being a veteran and serving in Iraq, but for now I will leave this one alone.

"To reach this goal, we must increase the supply of alternative fuels, by setting a mandatory fuels standard to require 35 billion gallons of renewable and alternative fuels in 2017 -- and that is nearly five times the current target. "
Well, so far there are no new fuel standards as we as Americans continue to burn fuels at recored levels.
3
"Achieving these ambitious goals will dramatically reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but it's not going to eliminate it."
Well I see by this statement that America will always rely on foreign influance. War's of oil are going to be ongoing until we as Americans can find a solution to this problem.
P.S. The Goverment isn't going to do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"And to further protect America against severe disruptions to our oil supply, I ask Congress to double the current capacity of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve."
Well if I was a terriorist this is a great thing look at what I found when I looked up "Strategic Petroleum Reserve" on yahoo:
Strategic Petroleum Reserve
... of defense against an interruption in petroleum supplies. ... Petroleum Reserves Website. FOIA. United States Department of Energy. Strategic Petroleum Reserve ...www.spr.doe.gov - 6k - Cached
Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Explains the role of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, its current inventory, and the location of the storage sites.www.fe.doe.gov/programs/reserves - 40k - Cached
"The location of storage sites"- I'm glad that is public knowlege, get real.

"America is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that will enable us to live our lives less dependent on oil. And these technologies will help us be better stewards of the environment, and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change. (Applause.) "
Bottom line is that there is to much money involved in the oil indestry to see it go by the waste side. (Exxon Mobil's $9.9 billion quarterly profit )
Currently there is a idea proposed to drill in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I am sure this will help oil consumption.
On this topic I rest my case why America is going six feet under fast.
